Children's Medicaid
Uninsured children in Texas may be able to receive health insurance through Children's Medicaid. Children's Medicaid, like regular Medicaid, offers a lot of benefits. It includes regular checkups and dental care.
Medicaid in general in Texas is designed to improve the health of people who are without insurance and will continue to go without medical care for everyone in the family if someone doesn't step in and offer some help. Although it receives federal funding, Medicaid is different in every state. It differs from state to state as the federal government left it to the states to determine how they wanted to disburse the funds to the citizens.
Children's Medicaid is designed specifically for children and their health needs. It is provided to children at no cost as long as the child and the child's family meet the requirements of the program. The requirements include:
- Being a Texas resident
- Being a US citizen or a certain category of legal resident. In some cases, like medical emergencies, this restriction does not apply
- Be of 18 years or younger
- Living in a family that has assets, not including the home, personal property, or primary vehicle, below a certain level
- Living in a family that meets Medicaid income requirements, living alone, or living with someone else
The requirements, while they seem basic, can be quite restrictive and are frequently not understood by those who are most in need of the system.
