Pre-existing Conditions

For people suffering from pre-existing conditions, trying to obtain health insurance can be a nightmare. This is a growing problem for children who are now too old to be covered by their parent’s insurance. If these kids can obtain insurance from their own employer, they are safe. Since “group insurance” offered by employers does not generally disqualify members who have pre-existing conditions, people do not have a difficult time being accepted.

However, for the people who have not yet found jobs in the weakening economy, finding a plan that is willing to cover them is difficult. Less than 20% of 2009 college graduates had a job lined up when they graduated. This has resulted in many young people not being covered by health insurance.

If one is self-employed, unemployed, or has an employer that doesn’t offer health insurance, they are forced to seek insurance as an individual. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, 21% of people who apply for individual health insurance are not accepted, charged a higher price, or offered coverage that excludes their precondition. From a purely business standpoint, the practice is understandable. Companies do not want to offer insurance to people they know will cost them big money.

The good news is Congress and the Obama Administration is dedicated to reforming the system. Hopefully, significant progress will soon be made to help make health insurance more accessible for everyone.
