Surgeon General Nominee
President Obama’s administration has high hopes for healthcare reform. With healthcare costs rising and millions of American’s uninsured, the government knows it must act quickly. To lead this effort, Obama nominated family practice physician Regina Benjamin as surgeon general.
Benjamin is renowned for her work in a nonprofit medical clinic. The Alabama clinic serves a small fishing community of impoverished residents. It has been destroyed three times by hurricanes and fire, and each time Benjamin has led the effort to rebuild the clinic. She has refinanced her home to provide additional funds for the clinic and stayed loyal to the community despite her mall salary. Since she sees firsthand the need for reform, she is expected to be a big asset in reform efforts.
Regina Benjamin says she will focus on wellness and prevention plans to keep America healthy and keep loved ones from dying of preventable illnesses. She aims to have a health care system where no one falls through the cracks.
Benjamin served in the National Health Service Corps after graduating from medical school. She then worked late hours in the emergency room to fund her health clinic serving immigrants. The health clinic provides care to people regardless of whether they have money to pay. She was the first physician under age 40 and first African-American woman to be elected to the American Medical Association Board of Trustees. She has been a recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award for Health and Human Rights from the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
