World’s Best Medical Care?
Many Americans assume the United States has the best medical care in the world. While it is true that we are home to some of the top medical centers, as a whole, the country is behind many other advanced nations in providing care.
The World Health Organization recently ranked the health systems of 191 nations. France and Italy came out on top, while the United States ranked 37th. In a follow-up study, the highly respected Commonwealth Fund compared the health systems of Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, United Kingdom, and the United States. The study looked at surveys given to patients and doctors regarding performance, quality of care, and access to care. The United States came in last.
All major industrialized nations provide universal health care coverage except the United States. In the United States, there are over 45 million people who do not have any coverage and many more who are underinsured. Studies show that people who do not have insurance are not likely to seek treatment for minor illnesses. When not treated, the once-minor illness worsens, further harming one’s health and leading to far more expensive costs when treated.
