Health Insurance for College Graduates Part I
If your child is graduating from college, it is important to look into health insurance coverage. Most children are dropped from their parent’s health policies after college graduation.
Luckily, there are student health-insurance policies which are designed for covering the period after graduation before the graduate can land his own employer’s plan. By purchasing student insurance, graduates will be protected for an affordable price. However, student insurance is only available for those under the age of 30 years. In addition, the coverage has to start before graduation.
Student health insurance applications are very brief and generally approved in a quick time frame. Complications such as heart problems, diabetes, cancer, drug and alcohol abuse, ulcers, kidney and gall bladder disease, and HIV are often disqualifying conditions.
If you have already missed the time frame in which to apply for student health insurance, you still have the option of a short-term health-insurance policy. Student and short-term policies exclude pre-existing conditions for a year. The policies do not cover pregnancy or prescription drugs, and all hospital admissions and outpatient surgeries must be authorized.
Although there are definite gaps which would typically be covered by a traditional insurance plan, both student and short-term policies are a good temporary plan. They are important to have in case of a major injury. It is best to think of the coverage as emergency, so select one with a high deductible and a low premium. A six month policy should usually suffice. In general, you can cancel the policy and receive a pro-rate refund.
